Estepa
Event for Folklore and tradition
00:00 - 23:59
Estepa’s Fair was first celebrated as such in 1872. It owes its organization and format to the 5th Marquess of Cereverales, who was the mayor of the city at that time. The Fair is arranged to coincide with the boisterous celebrations traditionally held in honour of the Octava de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a religious celebration which used to take place in September near the church. September saw the completion of a series of agricultural activities and the beginning of the new crop cycle. It was also the ideal time to buy and sell livestock, and the moment when the Marquesses used to arrive to do the accounts for their Estates.
The date also coincides with the celebrations in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and the conquest of the city by Ferdinand III.

One of its most popular attractions is its bullfights, held throughout the Fair week. The day dedicated to Goya-style bullfights in period costume is particularly interesting. The whole city adorns itself with Chinese lanterns and fair pavilions during this week.

Most of the crosses are carried by costaleros. Starting very early in the morning, the pasos (floats) are paraded through the streets of Estepa to the Plaza del Carmen (El Salón), and passers by are asked to contribute money as “alms”. At five o’clock in the afternoon there is a competition to choose the most original, best presented pasos.
