Place: Lucena
Lucena’s Easter processions, with religious images of immense cultural importance held aloft on the bearers’ shoulders and paraded to a very characteristic drumbeat in a procedure known locally as “santería”, make this one of the most unique events to be found anywhere in Andalusia. The most obvious feature of santería, which distinguishes the celebrations in Lucena from other manifestations of popular religious devotion, is the unique manner in which the processions are conducted. There are strict rules regarding respect for the images and what they represent, and the processions display an austere solemnity which transforms them into an aesthetic spectacle with a highly emotional impact on both participants and onlookers alike.
