Easter Week in Écija, an officially declared event of National Tourist Interest, is one of the most important in Andalusia.
Most of the religious brotherhoods were founded in the 16th century, and the Easter celebrations were enhanced in the 17th and 18th centuries by images carved by great sculptors such as Pedro Roldán, Juan de Mesa and Montes de Oca.
Indeed, the realism of these carved, gilt wood images and their decorative gold and silverwork is comparable to that found in major cities like Seville and Malaga.
