Easter Week in Priego is characterized principally by the originality and the long history of the celebrations which take place there, together with their continuity over the centuries, the variety of events organized by the religious brotherhoods in the town and the great cultural value of the religious images involved. The Easter celebrations here have been officially declared an Andalusian event of National Tourist Interest.
The morning of Good Friday is of particular interest. A huge crown packs into the space known as the Compás de San Francisco before midday, jostling to see the image of Jesús Nazareno. The platform bearing the image is always surrounded by a multitude of costaleros. When the procession reaches El Palenque it disperses, later to continue to El Calvario, where it is awaited by crowds holding aloft hornazos (pastries) to be blessed by Jesus. The scene at El Calvario represents the moment of Christ’s death.
The most typical features of Easter Week in Priego include the Pregón (Proclamation), the Hornazo (a local pastry), Saetas and Saeteros (religious laments and their singers).

Easter Week, officially declared an Andalusian Event of National Tourist Interest for its artistic and historic significance, is the city’s most important religious celebration. The event is remarkable both for the beauty of the carved images which are paraded through the streets of Osuna every spring and the enthusiasm and religious devotion of the local people who make it possible to enjoy such a solemn phenomenon year after year. The priceless religious imagery on display includes magnificent sculptures by such renowned artists as Juan de Mesa, Vicente de Tena and José de Mora.

Easter Week in Écija, an officially declared event of National Tourist Interest, is one of the most important in Andalusia.
Most of the religious brotherhoods were founded in the 16th century, and the Easter celebrations were enhanced in the 17th and 18th centuries by images carved by great sculptors such as Pedro Roldán, Juan de Mesa and Montes de Oca.
Indeed, the realism of these carved, gilt wood images and their decorative gold and silverwork is comparable to that found in major cities like Seville and Malaga.

Event for Easter week and religious festivals

There is documentary evidence that religious brotherhoods existed in Estepa as long ago as the beginning of the 16th century.
The Easter processions in the town have not altered much over the centuries, merely adapting to the times. Today two different forms of procession can be distinguished: one marked by silence and solemnity, and the other by richness and exuberance. Both, however, excite the same degree of religious fervour and enthusiasm. And, naturally, these manifestations of faith and culture play a major role in making Easter Week in Estepa very special indeed.

Event for Easter week and religious festivals

    26/03/2010 00:00 - 04/04/2010 23:59

Lucena’s Easter processions, with religious images of immense cultural importance held aloft on the bearers’ shoulders and paraded to a very characteristic drumbeat in a procedure known locally as “santería”, make this one of the most unique events to be found anywhere in Andalusia. The most obvious feature of santería, which distinguishes the celebrations in Lucena from other manifestations of popular religious devotion, is the unique manner in which the processions are conducted. There are strict rules regarding respect for the images and what they represent, and the processions display an austere solemnity which transforms them into an aesthetic spectacle with a highly emotional impact on both participants and onlookers alike.

Easter in Antequera is marked by a number of idiosyncracies which together result in a beautiful, harmonious phenomenon involving art, history, tradition and Faith.
These unique elements include the typical local figures of the hermanacos and campanilleros de lujo and the events known as “correr la vega” and “el encuentro”.

Event for Easter week and religious festivals

The unique features of Easter Week in Baena, officially declared an event of National Tourist Interest, make it one of the most original, unusual celebrations to be found anywhere in Spain.

Its main differentiating element is the Judío, or Jew, a figure which has formed part of the religious processions here for several centuries. The judíos carry traditional metal drums gaudily decorated with feathers. They wear embroidered red jackets and embossed gold helmets with plumes and black or white horsehairs. Depending on the colours of these crests, they are known either as Coliblancos (Whitetails) or Colinegros (Blacktails), and they are organized into different religious brotherhoods.

Easter in Puente Genil has been officially declared an event of tourist interest. The Saturdays in Lent, a special day set aside for visiting the headquarters of the different religious brotherhoods, and Easter Week itself, combine to produce a world of sensations. The harmonious interaction of religious devotion, art and tradition offer a unique spectacle in which the local people participate enthusiastically year after year.

Event for Easter week and religious festivals

    26/03/2010 00:00 - 04/04/2010 23:59

Easter in Alcalá la Real exudes a unique, very original sense of plastic and aesthetic refinement far removed from the pomp and ceremony of the religious processions. It is chiefly characterized by the merging together of religious devotion and popular revelry in processions with scenes from the Passion, living dioramas and proclamations.
This tradition can be traced back to the fusion of two earlier traditions: autos, or misterios, which had formed part of the Corpus Christi celebrations from the 15th century; and ingenios, religious and festive representations associated with the city’s different trade guilds.
Urban and human environments thus combined to produce a tradition which has deservedly been declared an Andalusian Festival of National Tourist Interest.
