The Culture Trails, discover our roots
La Mota castle is the town’s most significant architectural monument, and played an important role in the conquest of Granada. Over the years it has been a meeting place and melting pot for different cultures. This walled enclosure has been restored to its best, dominating the city and housing the castle, the abbey church and various other buildings.
The town’s strategic location is demonstrated by the watchtowers (atalayas) which form a ring around it.
Some of the most important religious buildings include the churches of “La Consolación”, “San Juan”, “San Antón”, “Santo Domingo” and “las Angustias”, as well as the convents of “La Encarnación” and capuchins.
The numerous chapels mainly located in the picturesque “las cruces” area are of particular importance.
Some jewels of civic architecture include the abbey palace, the town hall and “el pilar de los Alamos”.
