  A procession in honour of Saint Eufemia using traditional candelas (small bonfires) is held in Antequera on the Saturday before 16th September. On the following day, a Solemn Mass is celebrated in honour of both the Saint’s day and the capture of the city by Christian forces in 1410.

  This is one of the oldest fairs in Spain. It dates back to 1748, when it was first authorized by King Ferdinand VI.
  One of its most popular attractions is its bullfights, held throughout the Fair week. The day dedicated to Goya-style bullfights in period costume is particularly interesting. The whole city adorns itself with Chinese lanterns and fair pavilions during this week.

  Apart from a bullfight featuring some of the most prestigious matadors, the Spring Fair also includes AGROGANT: Antequera’s agriculture and livestock fair. There is an exhibition of machinery, an auction, a horse championship and several other activities related to the agricultural sector.

• Señor de la Salud y las Aguas

  On the last Saturday afternoon in April the image of El Señor de la Salud y de las Aguas is taken from its habitual location in a chapel in one of the side aisles of the parish church of San Juan Bautista to the main altar in the same church. The process is known as the “Bajada del Señor”.

  From that day until the middle of May, the church of San Juan becomes a pilgrimage destination for thousands of locals who flock to pray before this representation of Christ Crucified.

  Two novenas are dedicated to the Lord between 1st and 18th May, using a text which has remained unaltered for almost two centuries. The organization of the different activities is shared between the city’s various trade guilds and associations.

  The beginning of the Flamenco competition in April coincides with another type of music: jazz. The Antequera jazz festival offers music, cinema and plastic art exhibitions.

• Juan Casillas Flamenco Competition

  This time-honoured annual competition promotes Flamenco by encouraging the participation of cantaores who are just beginning to make their name at national level. It is held at several historic venues in the city. The winning finalist also performs in the Noche Flamenca de Santa María, an event held in August.
