Carmona rises up like an eternal watchtower over the fertile plains of the province of Seville, a crossroads and meeting place for civilizations.
A tour of its streets and squares, taking in its imposing heritage, provides ample evidence of the different peoples who have in the past made the city their home.
In Roman times Carmona was one of the key population centres in the region then known as Betica and this importance continued into the Moorish period, when it became the capital of one of the Taifa kingdoms.
Today it is a beautiful city which has proved itself capable of conserving its rich heritage, and is keen to share its art, its architecture and its history with visitors.
Carmona is not far from Seville. It sits atop the last major peak of the Alcores range at an altitude of 235m., from where it dominates the vast, fertile plain known as La Vega del Corbones. The principal access route is the N-IV Madrid-Seville highway, which also serves the city of Cordoba.
